My Thoughts on Facebook

Okay, so I’m not THAT rabid. But really, I do believe that facebook can be a serious fitnah for some people. I know some guys who are shy as hell around girls, but when they get on facebook, it’s like they’re someone else entirely. They chat it up with the ladies, and the ladies are swooning all over them. And the pictures. Good Lord of Mercy, the pictures! I mean, seriously. Facebook is more fitnah than a guy like me can take. That’s why I generally stay away from the opposite gender on Facebook (and RL). Well, with two or three main exceptions, but they’re all related to me somehow or the other.
What really gets me is the duplicitous personalities. When they’re in the masjid, it’s all “No no talking to sisters is haram! Astaghfirullah! Subhanallah! Inshallah! Allah Allah Allah Allah Allah!” And then they get online. And all hell breaks loose. And the Allah’s are put in their kufi for safe storage. Dude, if you’re going to be something, be that something no matter who sees you or who doesn’t. If you don’t talk to girls, don’t talk to them. If you talk to them, talk to them! Don’t play this game with me!
And that’s my 2 cents on facebook.

Hello i agree with you 100%. I have a guy friend who looks like a model. There are girls (muslims) that send him naughty pics of themselves to him. Its just crazy to me facebook is a dating service. The girls in this generation have lost there respect. the prophet (pbuh) said that a female should be shy and modest. Not these girls. Now im not saying all of them but it is getting worse and worse. There are also mothers on this facebook 2. I know alot of people messing up there reputation because of this. There are girls that are 22,23,24 and not even married because guys see how they act on facebook and dnt want any of that in there lives. Its ashame

I do agree with you that facebook is like a fitnah in its own way. Many guys (or girls) add people they don’t know of the opposite gender, and that’s where they begin to message each other all these love letters (“my love, I want to get to know you…etc…). And I see many people do this, and when I warn then about the fitnah it could cause, they merely shrug their shoulders and continue on their own way. I also hate how people use facebook to find girls to get married to. Its like a hunt, where you have to go through girl’s profiles to see who’s most suitable and best looking for marriage. And the girls also do things they bother me as well. They try to show off and draw attention to themselves through close-up profile pictures of themselves, and by making comments on people’s walls so others could read them and be impressed. Although there are many who do not do this, the number of people that do is increasingly significant. And I wish I could just put an end to it, but it’s not in my power. May Allah (swt) guide them 3alaa siraat al-mustaqeem (straight path)…Ameen!

The “straight path” (according to the Qur’an) is following the 5 tenets (belief, regular prayer, fasting, charity, pilgrimage), maintaining cleanliness, not bringing any living thing to any harm (physical, mental or emotional), pro-actively staying away from sin and things that might lead you to sin.
That is the straight path. Unfortunately, a lot of Muslims (who by definition should be following the Qur’an) don’t even know what the Qur’an says. (I’m in this category myself, although I’m working on correcting that).
Each chapter was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at different times under different circumstances. Many verses are not directly commandments but rather lessons. They talk about biblical stories, God’s commands to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in these different situations. So its fairly important to read the Qur’an in its entirety (or at least chapters at a time) to understand the true context of each verse.
I can see that you have fairly standard misconceptions about Islam. You’re not alone. May God guide us all to the straight path.
I do avoid FB to myself, and tell my friends that, FB’s owner is a Jewis, so I hope they avoid it too.
But overall, blogging is much funny than FB.

1. Knife is haram because it can cut your throat or vein
2. Using car is haram because it can hit and kill you or other pedestrian, or street user, whatever
3. Fly with airplane is haram because it can fall and kill you.
4. Riding a motorcycle is haram because it can break your neck when you fall from it.
5. Get married is haram because it can cause divorce
6. Don’t live cause it can make you die.
You get my point. Use it for good then it’s good, use it for evil, then it’s evil.

Muslim Clerics Declare Ban on Facebook
A day after calling Facebook a menace, Muslim clerics on Friday declared the popular social networking site forbidden for students under the age of 17 and banned when used for “immoral” purposes.
Clerics from across Java and Madura islands said Facebook was haram , or forbidden, when used for flirting or gossiping.
Gus An’im Mahrus, a spokesman for Lirboyo Islamic boarding school, or pesantren , in Kediri, East Java, said about 300 clerics had gathered for a two-day meeting at the pesantren to set guidelines for the Internet.
“We decided Facebook is haram when it is used for certain things such as flirting and gossiping between males and females, especially for those who are already married as it may lead to affairs,” An’im said. “And it is forbidden in Islam for its bad impact.”
He said the clerics also criticized Facebook for encouraging overly intimate conversations among pesantren students.
“We have decided to ban Facebook among our [10,000] students who are under 17,” he said. “Teenagers under the age of 17 are considered immature” and unable to deal with moral temptations.
An’im said the clerics were also concerned that Facebook could disrupt students’ studies, with some spending more time on the site than with their textbooks.
He was also concerned that Facebook could change how male and female students in pesantren interacted with each other.
At these boarding schools, separation between boys and girls is the norm. An’im said that Facebook encouraged students to flirt and this could lead to sinful lust.
“However, we still think that Facebook is good as it can be used to share knowledge and information,” he said, adding that Islam encouraged its followers to study in order to become better people.
“Using any kind of social network like Facebook can be advantageous when people use it for positive reasons,” he said.
An’im said the pesantren clerics did not need the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI), the country’s highest authority on Islamic affairs, to declare a fatwa on the issue.
“We are independent,” he said. “We have issued this warning to Muslim communities and all pesantren students across Java and Madura. They can spread this message to people around them.”
Facebook is the most popular Internet site in the country, outpacing user growth in China and India and beating search engines Google and Yahoo, according to Internet traffic site Alexa.com.

Hi, sorry, but can we talk about it as a wise man ? seriuosly, before this things can get internationally religions matter, I think the basic issues is the use of FB, Gods create human with POWER, if we use it wise, its became good power, but if we use it in bad things, and the power became a bad power. Think that FB is another TEMPTATION, for letting us know our selves, we can be good, or bad, it’s up 2 you, like festing, its all up to you. If all things being forbidden, and what use being a human ? what need having a MIND ?.

Assalammualaikum,
If you ever taken a course like Usul Fiqh, or anything that is related to the Syariah (Fundamental Laws of Islam – Qura’n and Hadith (sayings and past activities of Rasulullah SAW)).. you will know about the procedures to creating a derivational laws based on the fundamental laws.
Fundamental Laws ->(human derivation)-> Derivational Laws
Determining whether Facebook is Halal or Haraam is a Derivational case. But keep in mind that Allah SWT have said:
“This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion” (al- Ma`idah: 3)
The Fundamental Laws are perfect, thus the derivational laws depends on the capacity of thinking of human beings.
The scholars of Islam is really important and serves as fences so that Muslims do not step out of the boundaries which Allah SWT has defined.
For those of us who are not scholars, and are not knowlegable enough, please be careful of how you make an analysis and how you derive conclusions based on it.
Last but not least, the Muslim Scholar Association of Indonesian might have a different Fatwa than the Muslim Scholar Association in Russia, Egypt, USA, etc. That is why it’s called a fatwa. An Ijma have a higher authority than Fatwa. An Ijma is a derived law which is undisputed among all Scholars association throughout the world.
As for me, I’m not a scholar, I’m not a knowledgeable person, but I have took some Islam-related short courses. Hope this helps.

using any service, first you must read carefully and understanding the “terms”, that shown if we are muslim. We can use FB or another social networking site which still have good thing, to improve our mission, teach other about what islam mission, teach to all human who still forget about thier GOD, only one GOD ALLAH AL MIGHTY.
so, we can use this media, or better if you can buy “FaceBook shares” then we can hold and keep Facebook with “Muslim hands”. remembe , we are choosen by ALLAH, to be good example to other, and we have true right, to be leader with good example to other, so when you see any “bad thing” at FB, report them, make them banned, and other will like you, and give more respect to your brother and sister of muslim
